Global Accelerator Network - Multipurpose Virtual Laboratory


The most likely scenario of a linear collider is that it will be built by a collaboration of existing laboratories, which will remain involved during the operation of the accelerator. Advanced means of communication will be necessary to support efficient collaboration. GANMVL is a project which will design and build a novel collaboration tool and test in on existing accelerator collaborations. The tool is a mobile communication centre which provides immersive video and audio capture and reproduction of an accelerator control room, a laboratory workplace environment or an accelerator hardware installation. It is able to connect to standard measurement equipment (scopes, network analyzers etc.) and to elements of accelerator controls and make these connections available to a remote client. The remote user should be enabled to participate in accelerator studies, assembly of accelerator components, trouble shooting of hardware or analysis of on-line data as if he or she would be present on site. The GANMVL project will provide valuable experience of a new way in designing, building and operating large accelerator complexes, and will address the important psychological and sociological issues of the Global Accelerator Network.

GANMVL in Zeuthen

Desy Zeuthen is one of the collaboration partners of GANMVL. Its responsibility is to find suitable hardware components for a semi-mobile and a mobile device.

Regarding to the hardware specifications brought together by the collaboration partners, the semi mobile device is used for maintenance, service and monitoring tasks of higher scale and complexity. Possible fields of applications are: accelerator hall, rf-room, rack room, laser room, experimental hall, etc.
The device offers connectivity for several kinds of test and measuring devices as well as for high resolution cameras. Audio and video conferencing equipment is also included. The semi mobile device can be deployed within 15 minutes.
Two possible prototypes for this task have been taken into consideration so far.

The mobile device is an absolutely standalone device having an accumulator capacity sufficient for one shift of operation (usually 8 hrs) and stable WLAN connection either to the semi mobile or a labserver. Besides, the mobile device is easy in use and allows hands-free operation via a bluetooth headset. It is lightweight, low in size and high in robustness. There is also the possibility to connect several external devices like a scope, etc. via a variety of interfaces.
The chosen prototype for this task is a Motion LE1600 Tablet PC.
